Salt Mine Wieliczka Trip – In the Mysterious Land of Salt

Wieliczka – City named in the past Magnum Salt (latin) which meant Big Salt. Salt Mine in Wieliczka is awarded with UNESCO World Heritage title and qualified as monuments belonging to class “0”. The history of the Salt Mine dates back to 13th century – the first surviving written record of rock salt deposits was found in the 1290 foundation charter of the town, but does not mean that salt had not been produced here much earlier. The Salt Mine had been working uninterruptedly up to 1964, and since that year it has been still opened for tourists.

The tourist route takes about 3,5km and goes from 64 to 135 meters deep. Here you can admire absolutely beautiful 20 underground chapels, saline lakes, statues,  meandering corridors and original equipment and tools used by former mine workers. You can also see the Chapel of Saint Kinga – the biggest and most glamorous underground temple in the world carved in a block of salt.
